The Desert Beyond
Only days have passed since Edgar Trunk, Olivia Saunders, and Feebles narrowly escaped the demise of Pleasanton. Finally, after the tragic events that occurred at 31 Dossel Way, the three of them know the truth: the world is in bad shape.
As the three of them venture across a bleak desert landscape, they encounter possible starvation, definite annoyance, and even darker thoughts. But soon they come across a campsite tucked within a hidden oasis, where a group of kids have made their home.
Except, this seemingly splendid community is hiding a daunting secret: their shadows are beginning to disappear.
Rather than move on, Edgar and Olivia decide to help these kids in need. What they discover runs far deeper than any mystery they've yet to face.
Edgar Trunk
Older now, and beginning to understand the weight of what he carries. Edgar's sensitivity to the world around him deepens.
Olivia Saunders
Still skeptical, still brave — and increasingly aware that there may be no going back to anything ordinary.
Feebles
The faithful companion whose instincts continue to outpace everyone else's understanding.
The Oasis Community
A group of children who have built something remarkable in the middle of nowhere — and are slowly losing themselves to a terrifying affliction.
The Vanishing Shadows
Not a metaphor. The children's shadows are literally disappearing — and no one knows what it means.
The Desert
Vast, merciless, and full of things that don't want to be found. The landscape of Book Three is a character in itself.
